Using your Amex points for flights? Classic. But why stop there? Let’s dream bigger. Picture yourself indulging in a luxe hotel stay, complete with a poolside breakfast on the house. Those points could unlock that experience for you. Why settle for ordinary when extraordinary is just a swipe away?
Say hello to a luxury hotel stay
Before you do anything, the first thing to check is that you have the right number of points for a hotel stay. You can check this by simply logging into your Amex account. Here you’ll see points balance. Now if it turns out that you are short on points, don’t stress. You can also accumulate more points or use a sign-up bonus.
Then there’s the issue of the rewards program. Make sure you choose one that collaborates with hotels because not all do. Some programs to consider include Marriott Bonvoy as well as Hilton Honors. Once you’ve settled on a program, it’s also important to make sure the program’s offering fits your travel plans. This sounds complicated, but it’s really just the admin-y legwork you have to do to ensure you have a stress-free holiday. And whatever you do, you really don’t want to skip this step.
Once you’ve done all the necessary research, it’s time for the fun part: using your Amex points to make your booking. We highly recommend you keep an eye out for other specials and deals. This could mean the difference between forking out more money for breakfast and that complementary breakfast you’ve been eyeing.
The Overwhelm is Real: Rewards Programs Worth a Look
Not all hotel chains participate in Amex reward programs. And what that narrows your options, there are still some top class hotels you can stay at. But of course, like anything you have to know where to start. Here are just a few of the rewards programs to consider.
We get this question a lot: which reward program should I choose? While we don’t have one answer for you, there are three rewards programs we often recommend: Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors and Radisson Rewards. They all have slight differences but are all great options for AMEX credit card holders.
The Marriott Bonvoy rewards program lets you collect and use points at any participating partner hotels or Marriott properties. The great thing about this reward program is that points can be converted into Marriott Bonvoy points. This means you can redeem them for a hotel stay at more than 7,000 Marriott hotels.
Then there’s the Hilton Honors rewards program where any points can be used towards Hilton and affiliated hotels. What we like about this reward program is that Amex credit card holders can convert their membership rewards to points to Hilton Honors points. These can then be used to book accommodation at any of the 6,100 Hilton locations worldwide.
Last (but certainly not least) is Radisson Rewards. With this reward program, you can use points at participating partner hotels and Radisson hotels. Like many of the other rewards programs, Amex card holders have the option to convert their membership rewards to Radisson Rewards points.
